Step 1 — Getting from the airport to Warsaw city centre

From the airport, students can easily reach the city centre by:

  • SKM suburban train or Mazovian Railways train,
  • or public city bus.

The most convenient option is to travel to the railway station:

The journey from the airport to the city centre usually takes around 20–30 minutes.

Step 2 — Train journey to Białystok

Direct trains to Białystok depart from Warszawa Centralna ( Warsaw Central Railway Station) railway station.

The train journey usually takes around 2–2.5 hours, depending on the connection.

After arriving at Warsaw Modlin Airport, students can use the airport shuttle bus and train connection to reach Warsaw city center.

Accommodation

International students have the possibility to get an accommodation in the student’s dormitory. If student wishes to apply for a place in a dormitory, he/she must indicate this in the IRK system and this information will appear in the Application Form.

A place in a dormitory is not guaranteed.

Location

Dormitory is located approximately 3km from the city centre of Białystok, with a very good bus connection, both to the city centre and to the Faculties and Institutes of the University. Nearby, there are also biker stations available. First 30 min of bike use are free of charge.


Rent

The monthly rent is approximately 140 EUR for place in a double room. One month deposit is required.

Eduroam is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It is available in almost all of the universities buildings.

Limitless Internet access

Lots of students also buy a phone SIM cards, offering a limitless Internet connection and are using it later as a Wi-Fi Routers. Best place to buy one are mobile network shops. The passport or ID card is required to register a SIM card.

Cafeteria

There are lots of places at the faculties to have a coffee or some food. Cafeterias offer mostly both: cold and hot snacks such us breakfast sets, donuts, toasts, lunch menu, soups, salads, desserts, all kind of beverages.

Gym

Physical Education and Sports Centre is an interdepartmental institution. Its main aim is to organize sport activities. The building itself offers not only a gym space, but also sport grounds to play futsal, volleyball or basketball. It also offers ping-pong tables. Together with the University Sport Association (AZS), it also offers additional sports classes for the students interested in basketball, volleyball, football, judo, swimming, table tennis, athletics, powerlifting, body building, indoor rowing, and aerobic as well as summer and winter sports camps.

Libraries

The main library is located on the Campus. Each faculty also has its own.

Departmental libraries can be found on each faculty.

The academic year at the University of Bialystok is divided in two semesters (winter and summer). The first one begins in the first days of October (with a two–we­ek break for Christmas and New Year), the second semester starts in February and lasts until the beginning of July (with a week break for Easter holidays).

 

Each semester ends with a two-week exam session. The winter semester make up exam session is scheduled in mid February and the summer semester make up session is moved to the two weeks of July.

Public transportation

Białystok is a city which is well connected, with many bus routes all over the city and around. The students can buy the individual tickets in BKM offices, in buses, supermarkets, kiosks.

Individual tickets (prices given in PLN):

  • 5 normal / 2,50 student*
  • 4 normal/ 2 student - electronic tickets

Monthly tickets (prices given in PLN):

- Monthly/30 days – approx. 130,00 normal / 65,00 student*

An electronic BKM card is required to buy a monthly ticket. It is available in a BKM office at Lipowa 16 street or Składowa 11 street. To purchase the BKM card, the student needs to have their passport and a student ID card. The mentor assigned to each international student can help with that.

Bikers and scooters

BiKeR

There is a Białystok Municipal Bike Transportation called BiKeR. It provides an alternative form of transport, allowing its users to move fast around the city. It supplements the municipal transport in Białystok. There are approx. 60 stations located in different parts of the city, offering approx. 625 bikes. First 30 min of using are free of charge.

Blinkee

One of alternative way of transportation in Białystok are scooters, allowing its users to move around the city fast. It can be found, booked and unlocked on the map, via phone app. It costs approx. 0.65 PLN per minute of using and 0.10 PLN per minute of parking (if necessary).

The cost of living in Białystok is slightly lower than in other big cities in Poland. The monthly cost of living per student is approximately 1400-1800 PLN (290-380 EUR)

The students need to be aware of:

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol in public places is prohibited. Fine 100-500 PLN.

Cigarettes

Smoking is not allowed in forbidden areas such us, bus stops, train stations or most of the restaurant and the fine is up to 500 PLN.

Dropping cigarette on the street is forbidden and the fine is 50-500 PLN.

Information duty resulting from Art. 13 par. 1 and par. 2 of the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation):

Data controller of candidates’ personal data is the University of Bialystok, 20B Swierkowa Street, 15-328 Bialystok.

Data controller has designated the Data Protection Officer responsible for the proper processing of personal data who can be contacted via email: iod@uwb.edu.pl.

Personal data will be processed for the purpose of:

-  staff and students exchange under agreements concerning interinstitutional cooperation at the University of Bialystok,

A legal basis to process candidates’ personal data is:

Art. 6 par. 1 item a of General Data Protection Regulation, i.e. – explicit, unambiguous and voluntary consent of a candidate to process his personal data for the needs of the recruitment procedure;

Art. 6 par. 1 item b of General Data Protection Regulation, i.e. - processing is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party or in order to take steps at the request of the data subject prior to entering into a contract;

Art. 6 par. 1 item c of General Data Protection Regulation, i.e. - processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which the controller is subject;

Art. 6 par. 1 item f of General Data Protection Regulation, i.e. - processing is necessary for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by the controller.

Providing personal data as well as surplus data is voluntary but necessary to be hosted at the University of Bialystok.

Data may be disclosed to your home institution or other external entities such as: recruitment agencies, other agencies involved in the mobility process (for example: visa application agencies), embassies, consulates, police departments, border guard departments, student organizations, student associations, university and student science groups, dormitory administration, Centre for Foreign Language Teaching administration, School of Polish Language and Culture administration etc., and in cases envisaged by the provisions of law. Above entities may not belong to European Economic Area.

Data will be stored for the period necessary for the purposes of recruitment, processing, and for the period required by exchange regulations or by other agreements concerning interinstitutional cooperation regulations between the University of Bialystok and the Student’s Home Institution and by the provisions of law.

You have the right to access, rectify or erasure your personal data as well as restrict of data processing and portability and objection to data processing. You have the right to revoke your consent.

Whenever data processing infringes the provisions of the law in force, you have the right to lodge a complaint with supervisory authority.
