The authorities of the University of Białystok changed, another five UwB researchers received the title of professor, the cornerstone was laid for the new seat of humanities, and the university also had the opportunity to host outstanding historians from Poland and abroad.
The 2024 year was full of important and interesting events.
We start the summary with the change of University authorities. On September 1, 2024, prof. Mariusz Popławski - who replaced prof. Robert Ciborowski - became the new rector of the largest university in Podlasie. The Rector's College also consists of: prof. Krzysztof Korotkich - Vice-Rector for Education, dr hab. Agnieszka Piekutowska - Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation, prof. Anna Gardocka-Jałowiec - Vice-Rector for Students and Doctoral Students and prof. Tomasz Bajkowski - Vice-Rector for Development.
2024 also means new dean authorities and new directors/managers of selected university-wide units. The Doctoral School of the University of Białystok has also been officially operating since September 1. It was created from the merger of the Doctoral School of Humanities, the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences, operating at the university since 2019.
As usual, there was no shortage of important scientific successes. In the past year, 5 research workers received the title of professor. This is prof. Anna Janicka from the Faculty of Philology, prof. Krzysztof Buchowski from the Faculty of History, prof. Beata Kuryłowicz from the Faculty of Philology, prof. Wioleta Danilewicz from the Faculty of Educational Sciences and prof. Rafał Kosiński from the Faculty of History. The university also increased the number of habilitated doctors (9 people) and researchers with doctoral degrees (12 people). Scientists, doctoral students and students of the University of Bialystok are associated with important grants, projects, research, publications, conferences and social campaigns. 2024 was full of unique events. UwB hosted the 21st Congress of Polish Historians attended by almost a thousand historians, archivists, teachers, students and history lovers from Poland and abroad. One of them, Professor Robert Ian Frost, an outstanding British historian, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Białystok.
The title of honorary doctor of the University of Silesia was awarded to prof. Jerzy Nikitorowicz from the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Białystok.
Last year, the University Nature Center (named after professor Andrzej Myrcha) celebrated its 35th Anniversary and the 20th Anniversary - the Podlasie Festival of Science and Art, coordinated by the largest university in Podlasie.
There was also a ceremonial unveiling of the portrait of prof. Robert Ciborowski - rector of the University of Białystok in the years 2016-2024, as well as planting a tree in front of the Rector's Office by the new rector prof. Mariusz Popławski.
In December, the rectors of the University of Białystok, the Białystok University of Technology and the Medical University of Białystok and representatives of Polish organizations in Lithuania signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation in the field of joint education, promotion of science and culture in Lithuania.
In turn, at the headquarters of the Faculty of Law of the University of Białystok at Mickiewicza Street in Białystok, the Ombudsman's Customer Reception Point was opened.
The University of Białystok continues to develop its international contacts. In 2024 UwB joined, among others: to the Baltic University Program and the European University Association.
It was also a good year in terms of investment. The new headquarters of the UwB branch in Vilnius was officially opened and the foundation stone for the new headquarters of the university's humanities was laid on the UwB campus. Construction is ongoing.
There are also many important sequels. The third edition of the University of Białystok Tutoring Program "Student as a researcher, scientist and discoverer" has started; we continue to meet students as part of the "Study with UwB" campaign.
