Three Historians from the University of Białystok with ministerial support under the Excellent Science II and Social Responsibility of Science II programs

A project popularizing science and two monographs – these scientific undertakings by researchers from the Faculty of the History of the University of Białystok: dr Justyna Olędzka, prof. Marzena Liedke and prof. Piotr Guzowski received suport from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education which adjudicated competitions under the Excellent Science II and Social Responsibility of Science II programs. The total amount of founding is over 228,000 PLN.

Dr Justyna Olędzka deputy Dean of the Faculty of History at the University of Białystok received over 148,000 PLN funding from the Social Responsibility of Science II program for the implementation of the project „Global challenges – local security”. The science towards new dimensions of international conflicts.

The aim of the project is to popularize research results on new dimensions of international conflicts such as proxy wars, cognitive wars and informations wars. It is planned to include among other: a series of lectures and workshops during which participants will learn who to identify and combat  disinformation, learn about the specificity of the hybridity of contemporary conflicts and analyze the role of Podlasie  in the architecture of internal and international security. The project is addressed to among others: to students of Podlaskie secondary schools. 

Another two scientists from the Faculty of History received funding from the Excellent Science II program, in the module supporting scientific monographs.

For prof. Marzena Liedke the Ministry granted over 62,000 PLN for the project entitled “Magnate family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. “Social and demographic study.”

Its aim is to prepare a translation into English of prof. Marzena Liedke’s book entitled “A magnate family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th-18th centuries. Demographic and social study" which as a monograph "Magnate family in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th-18th centuries. Social and demopraphic study” will be published by Brill publishing house.

This work is devoted to issues that have not been addressed so far in Polish and foreign historiography: examining the basic demographic parameters in relation to families from the elite of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the magnates, especially strong in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. These include issues such as the age at which magnates and magnates entered into first marriage, the duration of the first and subsequent marriages of magnates, family size (number of children in the family), life expectancy for women and men, and the extent of definitive celibacy among members of the family. both sexes. The results of demographic research were calculated over the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and confronted with legal, social and cultural issues. 

Nearly 25,000 PLN received prof. Piotr Guzowski for the implementation of the project entitled "Noble Family in Pre-Partition Poland. A Demographic Study.” Its goal is to publish an open-access paper and electronic version of the English translation of Piotr Guzowski's book entitled "The noble family in pre-partition Poland. A demographic study" in the Peter Lang publishing house. 

Piotr Guzowski presents such issues as the age of concluding the first noble marriages, the duration of marriages, fertility and life expectancy in the period from the 15th to the 18th century. The author also analyzed the size and structure of noble households and compared Polish data with the demographic parameters of the nobility of other European countries.
